Step away from perfection and discover the freedom of painting expressively in watercolour.
In this relaxed, hands-on workshop, we’ll explore how to create the feeling of trees, grasses, and natural landscapes using loose, intentional marks rather than excessive detail. You’ll learn simple techniques for suggesting form, creating atmosphere, and building depth while allowing the watercolour to do some of the work for you.
We’ll experiment with loose brushwork, expressive marks, layering, and unexpected tools, because you don’t always need a brush to create a beautiful suggestion. Sometimes a simple mark, a bit of texture, or a controlled splash can say more than a perfectly painted detail.
Together, we’ll explore how to:
- Create the suggestion of trees and grasses with simple, expressive techniques
- Use loose brushwork to capture movement, atmosphere, and energy
- Create a sense of depth without filling your painting with excessive detail
- Work with suggestion rather than trying to paint every detail
- Experiment with different ways of making marks and textures
- Let water, pigment, and happy accidents become part of the painting
This workshop is beginner friendly, all skill levels are welcome, so no previous watercolour experience is necessary. Whether you’re new to watercolour or looking to loosen up your existing practice, you’ll be encouraged to explore, experiment, and find your own expressive way of painting.
What’s Included
All high-end, professional-quality materials are included, so you can simply arrive ready to paint.
Each participant will receive two 5 × 7-inch sheets of 100% cotton, deckled-edge watercolour paper to complete two original artworks during the workshop.
You’ll leave with two finished pieces, new techniques to continue exploring, and hopefully a little more confidence in letting go of perfection and painting with expression.

The studio is located in a loft space and is accessed by stairs, which may not be suitable for all participants.
