Let’s take a closer look at the Premier Prismacolor Pencils – Ok so l am going to give you an honest review on these Coloured pencils. So after some research and also trying the Prismacolor Scholar line (and liking them),  l decided to splurge and get a set of 150 Premier Prismacolor set, l picked Prismacolor Premier for several reasons.

  1. They offer a huge colour selection for blending and this really appealed to me. Not only can you purchase them in sets, but they are also offered open stock which means you can buy them individually. “Michaels Art Stores” offer them open stock, so l can easily find them.
  2. They do come in nice tins or box for storage.
  3. They have an amazing soft wax pigment that can easily be spread over different surfaces, and blending them and layering them are fantastic.
  4. The waxy pigment can be thinned out with solvent, l use an odorless paint thinner that can be painted and spread over the surface.
  5. I love how the white colour covers and layers.
Here is what l didn’t like about them,

  1. They were pricey – but you do get what you pay for, right?
  2. These pencils are so soft that sometimes they break internally making the pencil life shorter. In this case you need to make sure that you don’t drop them, you will need to store them properly, not in the heat or they will melt. So you might have to baby them a bit LOL
  3. Be careful what sharpener you use. So far l have only used the mechanical ones and seem to be having good luck getting a nice sharp end and l am very careful with breakage. I just go slow and take my time when sharpening. The lead is so soft that you will have to sharpen often, so invest in a good quality sharpener.
When used correctly, Prismacolor drawings can take on the appearance of a painting. They are so soft and l love working with them. They are awesome for detailed work.

I love being able to layer many colours and you don’t need to apply a lot of pressure when covering your piece making it easy to layer and blend. Too much pressure can make a waxy build up which you don’t want anyway. The colours are vibrant and if you are worried about light fastness, Prismacolor makes certain colors light fastness, some aren’t, so if you do some research, in fact l think there website might indicate which ones are and which ones are not.

In all seriousness these pencils are so soft and velvety that almost anyone can be successful with them.
Let me know what you think of them, l would love to hear from you.

I am hoping that l can be inspirational and informative. I always feel that paying it forward is a great way to live life. As a self taught artist l will try and share with you what l have learned.
